Solva, the picturesque gem nestled in the heart of southwest Wales, has recently been anointed as one of the country's most beautiful villages. This accolade, by Conde Nast Traveller, has sent ripples of both pride and perplexity through the quaint harbour community. However, amid the celebrations, a shadow looms over this idyllic setting in the form of proposals to place the DARC radar system close by.

This proposal has sparked significant opposition in Solva and the surrounding Pembrokeshire area.

The PARC Against DARC campaign highlights a critical question on their website: “When did Dewisland, Pembrokeshire, or humankind ever vote for the US military to control all of space?”

The DARC Radar System: A Controversial Proposal

Contrasting sharply with the village’s charm and tranquility is the looming proposal to install the DARC (Defence Advanced Radar Control) system nearby. This advanced military radar installation promises to enhance national security but at what cost to Solva and its surrounding countryside?

The proposal has sparked intense debate among locals and environmentalists.

This isn't however, the first time the region has faced such a dilemma. In the 1990s, there was a vehement local opposition to another radar system proposed as part of the so-called "Space Wars" initiative. That plan, aiming to bolster the UK’s defence capabilities against potential satellite threats, was ultimately scrapped due to public outcry and concerns over environmental and health impacts.

Last year, a scoping report was submitted to Pembrokeshire County Council, with claims from the US/UK military that the project would create one hundred new jobs. However, campaigners argue that these positions would primarily be filled by American specialists, not locals, effectively resulting in a loss of three hundred jobs at the existing site.

PARC Against DARC is has launched a robust campaign with a new website filled with calls to action, social media pages, a petition, and a Crowdfunder. The campaign's website outlines several key arguments against the DARC project, including security, environmental, and health concerns. They cite research indicating higher cancer rates and other health issues in populations living near high-powered, long-range radio frequency installations.

A public launch meeting at Solva Memorial Hall on Thursday 27th June was held where speakers and experts updated in person and via life streamed video link the unfolding situation. There will also be an open discussion at the meeting where all concerned parties can discuss plans to oppose the proposals and to get involved in the campaign. Organisers invite all residents, local businesses and elected representatives who have concerns about DARC to attend the meeting and make their voice heard.

The campaign has gained urgency following UK Defence Minister Grant Shapps' announcement last December that St Davids is the 'preferred UK site' for the Deep Space Advanced Radar Concept (DARC) radar array.

Campaigners argue that the Ministry of Defence (MOD) must not use its typical secrecy to push through potentially hazardous plans without thorough public scrutiny. They insist that the MOD has a duty to prove the safety and environmental viability of such a significant infrastructure proposal.

The Clash of Interests: Beauty vs. Security

The juxtaposition of Solva’s recognition as a beautiful village and the potential installation of the DARC radar system highlights a classic conflict between preservation and progress. On one hand, Solva’s beauty is a natural asset, drawing tourists and bolstering the local economy. On the other, proponents of the radar system argue that it is a crucial development for national security.

Environmental groups have also weighed in, warning that the construction and operation of the radar system could disrupt local wildlife and mar the pristine landscape. The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, a haven for walkers and nature lovers, could be particularly affected, potentially deterring visitors and harming the local tourism industry.

A Community at a Crossroads

As the debate rages on, Solva’s residents find themselves at a crossroads. The village’s beauty, now officially recognised, is a source of pride and economic opportunity. However, the DARC radar system proposal threatens to undermine this, introducing an element of industrial disruption to the tranquil setting.

Looking Ahead

With recent polls showing Donald Trump as the front runner for a return to the white house is this quiet corner of Pembrokeshire faced with becoming a pawn in the promised “US Space Force” plans.

In the end, whether Solva remains a haven of picturesque beauty or becomes a focus of modern space defence technology, it is clear that the village’s unique character and spirit will continue to inspire a fight of David and Goliath proportions.
